“There were Nazi collaborators in France, and even among the Jews. Why would Poland be somehow immune? It wouldnt be. This effort is therefore suspect.”
This effort by the Polish gov’t is NOT suspect. Facts are facts. The guards at Polish concentration camps were mainly German. There were some small amount that were Polish, most were not. There were Jewish Polish collaborators too. But the amount of blame placed on Poles as being some major contributor to the Holocaust are overblown, exaggerated, and basically an outright lie.
Many Poles saved the lives of their Jewish neighbors and/or hid Jews at risk to their own lives. There is no black and white picture of those horrible years in Poland, rather varying shades of gray too, and much hyperbole not based in fact.
Maybe. Lots of Ukranians in the SS auxiliaries at the camps. Some Hungarians. I've not heard of Poles which isn't to say there weren't any, or at least any willing if they weren't recruited.
Many guards were Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians.
Poland was the only occupied country where anyone caught helping a Jew in any matter was automatically killed, together with their relatives.
