You need to read up on the Judenrat, the Jewish officials in Poland that collaborated with the Nazis. The Nazis told them how many bodies they needed, and the Judenrat picked the Jews that would be transported to the labor camps to be worked to death. (Unless, of course, the one picked had the resources to buy his or her way out).

The Jewish participation has always struck me as one of the most tragic aspects of the Holocaust. Trading one’s soul for a little more life.
