Donald Trump has blasted as 'dumb' a refugee deal between Australia and the United States, but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is confident the president won't backflip on their agreement.
An explosive tweet from Mr Trump has once again cast doubt on the deal, in which the US would take refugees currently held on Manus Island and Nauru in return for Australia accepting refugees from Central America.
'Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!' the US president tweeted on Thursday.
Mr Turnbull said despite the president's tweet, he had received multiple assurances from Mr Trump, his press secretary and the US embassy the deal would be progressed.
'This is not a deal that he would've done or that he would regard as a good deal,' Mr Turnbull told Fairfax radio.
'But the question is, will he commit to honour the deal? And he has given that commitment.'
The prime minister wouldn't tell Sydney radio Macquarie Radio whether Mr Trump had labelled the deal dumb or otherwise in their phone conversation on Sunday, but has denied reports the call ended abruptly or in anger.
'I want to make one observation about it, the report the president hung up is not correct, the call ended courteously,' he said.

“...I’m not.”

Got it. Instead of making the refugees stay in Muslim areas of the world, we’ll settle them all in Missouri. Works for me. Enjoy your new neighbors.
Got it. Much preferable to send tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers to take and occupy a big chunk of Syria. How many dead American soldiers is a Syrian safe zone worth to you?
I think these refugees sfe from Malaysia. We should take them and immediately transport them back.
Are there any stipulations as to what the US may or may not do with these illegal aliens? Perhaps we should honor the deal made with the Aussies and then after processing and vetting of these illegals, send them back where they originated from. Or...something similar.
The leftist media is into what I call the fabrication of news. So, file these stories away in the fiction files.
That's true of a lot of refugees. It doesn't make it true of these ones.
This is part of the problem - people hear or read 'refugees' and assume it means Muslim. But there are a lot of Christian refugees out there as well. Especially from the Middle East.
And we have a significant number of these people - and others who aren't Christian but also aren't Muslim, there are other possibilities as well - in these camps on Manus and Nauru, and there are very good reasons to believe those are the people included in this deal, though for domestic political reasons, that isn't being openly stated.
Oh my, you must be an insider....right?
Where are they?
