Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels clashed heavily for a third straight day at a flashpoint town Tuesday, as thousands of locals remained without power after a deadly surge in fighting.

The industrial hub of Avdiivka came under attack on Sunday from insurgents seeking to wrest back territory controlled by Kiev during the nearly three-year war.

Poroshenko was Merkel’s poodle today. Sad to see. Ukraine took the EU bribe money to internalize the Russian invasion and are now are SOL.

It does seem like the plan is to let Ukraine slowly slide back into the Russian orbit. Once Putin started shooting Merkel wasn’t so interested in a western oriented and democratic Ukraine anymore. Germans like Merkel and Steinmeier are at heart Russophiles. They don’t care if Putin turns Ukraine into a parking lot in front of the Russian market for their German goods.

I’m now on record here that Trump will tell Russia the US will not contest any Russian actions east of the Dnieper River or the Crimea in exchange for another nuke deal, full cooperation on terror and the abandonment of Iran. And recognition of the Baltics/Poland as NATO countries.

And that would be a good deal for the US.

Say what you will about the Russians, they stick to treaties for the most part. If they make that deal, it’ll be good.

Poroshenko is a Russian toady...

What? Poroshenko is blatantly anti-Russian in words and behavior. You are right that he is corrupt though...INSANELY corrupt. All he knows how to do is steal money and kill his own citizens. He will likely not make it through the next Presidential election.

58% turnout— 21 million votes cast. 16 political parties. Coalition was clearly pro Russian. We supported a military coup d’tat to overthrow the elected government. The Russians moved to support their only warm water port and access there to . Russia had a binding lease on the port in Crimea until 2042. That was part of the agreement with Ukraine on dissolution of the Soviet Union.
We just blatantly participated in a military takeover of a democracy. I find that disgusting and Shameful, Go TRUMP!!

>It does seem like the plan is to let Ukraine slowly slide back into the Russian orbit.

That’s a sensible plan. We gained nothing by taking over the government the Ukraine and created a friction point for a future war by holding it. It’s a corrupt worthless nation with little value in the parts that we control.

Merkel wasn’t interested because she doesn’t have an army and most Europeans view the possibility of war between the US and Russia over the Ukraine to be pure insanity.

The Ukraine was supposed to be a power grab for western elites to steal the oil and gas wealth off of the Crimea Peninsula (hence why Joe Biden’s son was put in charge of one of their biggest oil companies after the coup). Once that possibility evaporated European elites saw nothing to gain and lots to lose by continuing the conflict. It was continued and escalated only at the insistence of the State Department that strangely wants war with Russia.

Poroshenko is a billionaire. But most of his chocolate factories are in Russia, which makes him toe the line.
Upthread a poster commented on eastern Ukraine. It is true that they are more pro Russian there. Western Ukraine,no.

This is actually incorrect. Poroshenko’s company, Roshen, has six factories, only one of which is in Russia (Lipetsk). As far as I know, he is trying to unload his factory. It has been on the market for over a year and he cannot find any buyers. Additionally, Russia no longer imports his products since 2013. Poroshenko is a lot of things (corrupt, evil, ...), but a Russian stooge he is not.

Well I hope you are right. As an aside, he is Jewish as are most of the 400 members of the Verkovna Rada. They have already had anti semetic problems down in Uman which look to get worse. The head of Naftogas is paid 3 million hrivna a month which does not sit well with ordinary Ukrainians either. I see trouble ahead.

The entire Ukrainian ruling class needs to be pushed out of power. They are all corrupt. I see Russia as the good guys and Ukraine as the villains in this conflict. Its not hard to see which side are killing civilians in order to maintain their hold on power.
