The school lunch program is a nightmare. Started with good intentions, it turned into a massive problem with the feds saying, “If you want to keep it, you also have to do ‘x’”.
50 things later, 100 things later, all with nothing to do with feeding children, and all about federal control over public education. A lot of it was actually “anti-education”, sucking up the administrators, teachers, and students time for things unrelated to teaching.
Mandatory surveys, mandatory testing, mandatory paperwork, mandatory this, that and the other. And do it all, or we’ll cut off your school lunch program money!
It was a very big part of the states near revolt over “unfunded mandates”.
AlthoughI am positive that it can be determined, we will never know the absolute total tonnage of wasted food that was thrown away, literally, it must be in the hundreds (thousand?) of tons...
