William Randolph Hearst would be my choice for the modern era.

Virgil for the ancient world; Augustus felt that great propaganda should also be great art, and he hired the best :-)

Definitions matter; I fear “fake News”, is like “Treason” and “Racism” becoming something people just use as a pejorative rather than being something actually properly defined (I can’t count the number of morons on all sides of the political spectrum who don’t realize that “treason” has a VERY specific definition, and it technically hasn’t happened in many years, indeed it cannot in the absence of a declared war).

Journalism has always been biased.

In the past, print media had plenty of competition.

Today, there is more concentration of power. TV, radio has fewer owners.

ABC, CBS, NBC are a cartel that operates similiar to OPEC. Just look at the similiarity in their reporting.

The media needs more competition. Cancel your cable tv and give the savings to websites, journalists, etc who compete with the liberal media.

Help create more competition.

Egyptian were practicing media control long before the Romans coined the term 'damnatio memoriae'.

In contemporary times, before Lippman there was this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_Public_Information

Not just the reporter but the editors, photographers, and all the rest of the staff.

But the fact that one can never achieve pure objectivity shouldn’t stop professionals from trying. Perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of Practical.

“...shut up and LISTEN was not a slander. It is excellent advice. “

Actually, that’s a functional definition of “Journalism 101” if anyone plans to do their JOB with integrity and professionalism.

Yes, put Walter Cronkite at the top of the list. His lies took 58,000 American lives in the Viet Nam war.

Don’t forget Walter Duranty, reporter for the NYT who supported Stalin while masquerading as an objective journalist, and the NYT faithfully filled their pages with pro-Stalin propaganda.

Even LBJ questioned Mr. Cronkite’s loyalty.

Without Cronkite and Rather (and CBS) working with the conspirators, Americans would have known the truth years ago.

Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather

Jefferson should know all about ‘fake news’. Since he clandestinely backed Phillip Freneau’s newspaper - The National Gazette to claim Washington wanted to be king!

Not to mention he supported the Jacobin terrors even when their horrific crimes became so obvious that the other Founding Fathers became disgusted with them, which I can probably pin on the September Massacres, and the Reign of Terror.
