Our Founders shared and discussed the ideas that swirled in Europe especially in France where the natives were growing increasingly restless at the heavier taxation meted out and despotism behaviors of courtesans of the Bourbon Kings. It is safe and accurate to say that the stirring events of France weighed a heavy influence on the American Revolution.

Our Founders knew well and subscribed to the thoughts and views of the revolutionary Voltaire. Many of our ideas of liberty and freedom came through Voltaire.

Note the disconnect between reference to Voltaire's advocacy of Freedom of Religion and his outrage at the 'religion' of Islam.

I need to thank you for pointing out the change of the meaning of courtesan. I lived in France for a time decades ago and was immersed in its culture and history, so likely my usage came from then.
Interestingly, Collins has courtier translated to courtesan to be a man,

Likely, the carryover from my time in France decades ago has me reverting to courtesan in the sense of Collins above. However, as you pointed out, it can be taken far from its historical context to something that distracts a reader, so I shall, as a result, avoid using the term and refer perhaps to agents of the King. Actually, it was Jefferson and continued by Madison. The Muslim pirates of the Barbary Coast demanded and were granted between 20% and 50% of the revenues to the US Treasury at the time as ransom for the freedom of American trade ships to pass into the Mediterranean. It, therefore at a point, made practical financial sense to take them out.
The saga of the Barbary Coast pirates is an interesting piece in the history of the United States, The debate centered on whether it was more practical and expedient to just pay them their ransom demands or go to war with them.
Americans were very pacifistic then although they had fought relentlessly against the British. As the Barbary Coast pirates received payment from the US government, they became EMBOLDENED and demanded more, and more was given until it was clear that paying them only caused an increase in their outrageous demands.
