Actually the letter he was referring to was written by Sullivan Balou (sp)

A beautiful letter from a father about to die in battle to his wife to raise up his son to be a brave and honorable man.

It was made memorable from Ken Burns The Civil War.

That being said it was very much out of place given his earlier comments.

He was reading a very inspiring letter from a Union soldier to his wife Sarah. The letter is a beautiful piece of prose. Coming from Chuck Schumer makes it sort of sound like it was being read by an alligator or a crow.
