Opposition to direct US involvement in WWII was overwhelming right up until Pearl Harbor. Almost the entire political right was in the “isolationist” camp as was FDR, the NYT, Washington Post etc.
The pro-intervention camp was small and was largely made up of card carrying communists.
After America was attacked, 99% of the “isolationists” supported US entry into the war.
There was never really much controversy over the issue. We went from being overwhelmingly in favor of staying out, to overwhelmingly in favor of getting in once we were attacked by Japan.
The liberal media later created a narrative to try to smear the political right.
Not to mention that Leftist saint Woodrow Wilson first used the slogan in 1916.
