Visit Pompeii sometime. The houses of the filthy rich had huge holes in the roof to let in rain water and sunlight. No windows, even though plate glass was available to the Romans. No fire places. The only heat were the iron torch basket things that provide light and heat. I cannot image that it got cold in winter in Pompeii!
