The media won't go there, but it is a FACT that both the Chinese and Russians (and others) have perpetrated major hacks of federal databases, as well as major corporations, on more than one occasion, and it is a FACT that none of those hacks generated anywhere near the media attention that the hacks of the DNC and Podesta have generated. This alone is proof that this whole story is politically motivated, regardless of whether the Russians were the hackers.

Who was behind the "hacks" is not nearly as important as how easy it was to commit the "hacks". The world is full of criminals and hostile actors. Mature adults recognize this grim fact and take appropriate measures.
In my company I have to change my passwords every 3 months or I get locked out of my account and my manager gets notified. If I setup a private email server I would probably be facing criminal charges and definitely be terminated with cause.
