leftists = liberals. What’s the difference?
Not a big difference, but a “liberal” (someone who calls himself a “liberal”) is someone who is a leftist who doesn’t understand what leftism is, and thinks that he is somehow less extreme... thus “liberal”.
But yes, you are right, they are essentially equal.
