The Trump effect has landed forcefully on Capitol Hill.
Less than two hours after President-elect Donald Trump criticized House Republicans in a tweet, of course for trying to gut an ethics investigative unit on the first day of business in the new Congress, those plans lay in shambles in the Republican conferences meeting room.
The immediate outcome was to keep intact the independent Office of Congressional Ethics
There was a broader outcome, too: The unruly Republican caucus that has wreaked havoc in the House for the entirety of Ryans tenure fell in line. And there were signs, judging from Tuesdays drama, that they might continue doing so this year.

They were gutless before obama, why shouldn’t they be even more gutless before Trump?
I think some of these sniveling cowards have 770 days left in office. Then it’s back to the car lot.
Paul Ryan is a weak leader and has no control over anybody.
Trump will have congress eating out of his hand.
They just need a firm hand.
Ryan is a criminal. It it were up to me, he would spend the rest of his life in a sound proof concrete cell with no light until he went stark raving mad praying to his Allah.
Maybe they realized it was a stupid way to start a historical session of Congress...
No.
They got in trouble and he gave them a way out.
But the WashPost’s lie is a more ‘fun’ narrative.
Republicans didn’t gut anything. WaPo lies as usual.
The tone deafness was incredible.
With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS, Trump wrote on Twitter.
PEOTUS Trump recognizes the shortcomings of the ethics body, but also recognizes terminating it as one of the first Congressional orders of business is not wise; and seeing as how the Dems and the MSM are misrepresenting the move to reform it (fake news!), he is more than correct.
There is a new Sherriff in town!
These rules changed were voted in secret, behind closed doors in the
dark of night. In addition, there was no individual roll call vote.
Only a final tally.
I have seen a few members come out and say they voted against it.
However, who were the 117 members that voted for it?
A real “ethical” way to vote on “ethics rule changes”.
This is the kind of swamp Trump was sent to DC to drain.
Good luck and God speed President elect Trump.
Exactly!
Very sorry to see my Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) introduce this crap against Trumps wishes. It seems that Ryan was on Trump's side this time and had opposed the change too.
I certainly hope this is the last time these deaf republicans run afoul of Trump.
What a stupid post. I mean really embarrassing and stupid. Because you don’t like someone, you want him to convert to Islam, in solitary, with no lights. Sometimes those accusations of Trump supporters are true. You are no better than those occupying Sessions’ office. Grow up.
Yea the back of the hand. And smartly, too.
Wow. Someone who gets it and understands it here. Thank you.
So totally agree with you and Robwin above
The Washington Post plays with us.
This title indicates the paper seeks to divide and conquer us. Stirring the pot before Trump lines up his executive agenda and his order of events.
We know we have Establishment still running both Houses, but, we want to be the ones who bring them to heel — not the Marxist media who simply want us out of the Majority.
