Mar-a-Lago, the Future Winter White House and Home of the Calmer Trump
The New York Times ^ | January 1, 2017 | Maggie Haberman

Posted on 01/01/2017 11:34:04 AM PST by Beautiful_Gracious_Skies

When President-elect Donald J. Trump rang in the new year this weekend, he did it in Gatsby-like opulence, joined by the actor Sylvester Stallone, the gossip page fixture Fabio, and a crowd of wealthy developers reveling under the swaying palm trees at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach....

..Mr. Trump’s 118-room private club, is likely to eclipse them all as the 45th president’s winter White House. And that was always the intention of Marjorie Meriweather Post, the cereal heiress and the property’s original owner, who left Mar-a-Lago to the federal government when she died in 1973, hoping it would serve as a home for presidents.

But the government had no interest..., and Mr. Trump later bought the property for less than $10 million, turning it into a club where membership costs six figures....he opened up Mar-a-Lago’s membership to Jews and African-Americans, who had been excluded from other members-only establishments. He was also the first club owner on the island to admit an openly gay couple.

Since Mr. Trump’s victory in November, Mar-a-Lago has been stuffed with guests attracted by an amenity unique to this club: the chance to rub shoulders with the next president.-snip-

At the annual New Years Eve party...Guests stepped onto a red carpet as they entered the club, and wandered over to a poolside cocktail party. Mr. Trump later delivered remarks, according to a guest, who said he thanked his family and the club members for their support over the years.

Calmer Trump? - somewhere in the 15th paragraph the writer describes how calm and relaxed DJT is at Mar a Lago.

Trump's NYE guests included: Laura Ingraham and Howie Carr, conservative radio hosts and also Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski from MSNBC.

The article goes on to mention statements about or made by: Douglas Brinkley, Chris Ruddy, Rudy Guiliani, Rex Tillerson, Brian Burns, Isaac Perlmutter, Robert K. Kraft, Carlos Slim, David H. Koch, and Trump family members.

DJT managed to give the WH press pool the slip to play golf at his club nearby in Jupiter. That must be a fun game to play!

This is not a bad article given that it's from NYT. Minimal snark content.

Not to worry, the mains stream fake news media will claim that he is “on vacation” whenever he is working out of there.

Same lie they used about W and the Crawford Ranch.

Actress Dina Merrill is Marjorie Merriweather Post's daughter.
Dina's father as THE Merrill of the stock brokerage....one of Marjorie's husbands.

This is Dina's bedroom at Mar-a-Lago....that's her silver-leafed canopy bed.

They certainly wouldn't have bothered with that detail 60 days ago.

My first thought also. All we will hear about from the dishonest press is the amount of vacation time he spends their.

Dina's father as THE Merrill of the stock brokerage....

Dina's father was EF Hutton ... and Ms. Merrell is worth $5 billion today. Not too shabby. :-)

In the 1990s, Trump was running into a problem getting his golf course approved by the local town council in Palm Beach, which was imposing restrictions on his bid.

So Trump shot back with maximum effect. As reported by the Washington Post’s Mary Jordan and Rosalind Helderman on Nov. 14, 2015: “Trump undercut his adversaries with a searing attack, claiming that local officials seemed to accept the established private clubs in town that had excluded Jews and blacks while imposing tough rules on his inclusive one.”

The Washington Post report continues, “Trump’s lawyer sent every member of the town council copies of two classic movies about discrimination: ‘A Gentleman’s Agreement,’ about a journalist who pretends to be Jewish to expose anti-Semitism, and ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ about a white couple’s reaction to their daughter bringing home a black fiancé.”

Oh, right.I read all the Post bios....Dina adopted Merrill's name b/c of her father's occupation.

Ted Hartley, her current husband, announced that Merrill suffers from Lewy body dementia and is in "an advanced stage".....that she now has difficulty in speaking and understanding complicated sentences.

Amazing that Dina Merrill is still alive at the age of 93. She may be proud how Donald resurrected her mother’s mansion and gave it life.

Rusty, I live about 40 minutes north of Mar A Lago,
Been by there many many times.
Worked on the island some and here is the real story.
Within about three miles of Trumps joint is 3 or 4 other very snooty private clubs, either Golf, Tennis etc.
Kennedy couldn’t join cause he was a Catholic. Jew? Black? LAtin? Irish, Gay? NOPE.
Trump changed that and it wasn’t too long ago,

President Trump will get more accomplished in one day of "vacation" than Obama got done in a month at the White House.

Glad to hear Camp David is on the outs. That place always reminded me of Jimmy Carter for some reason.

‘Times’ Reporters should check with structural engineers before blowing this off as ‘ego’...

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/12/us/politics/trump-president.html?action=click&contentCollection=U.S.&module=RelatedCoverage&region=EndOfArticle&pgtype=article

“Mr. Trump reveled in recalling the challenges required to design and build the apartment, decorated in 24-karat gold and marble in the Louis XIV style, saying he simply wanted to see if such an ambitious undertaking could be accomplished. He described it less as a home than a tribute to his own self-image.”

“I really wanted to see if it could be done,” Mr. Trump said at the time, as he showed Mr. D’Antonio around the apartment. “This is a very complex unit. Building this unit, if you look at the columns and the carvings, this building, this unit was harder than building the building itself.”

Did Mika and Joe grovel to The Donald to ask for forgiveness and kiss his ring? They really had no choice if they want an access to him at all. Very funny!!!!!!!!!!
