Cuomo commutes sentence of Brinks robbery getaway driver
NY Post ^ | 30 December 2016 | Carl Campanile

In a bombshell move, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday commuted the 75-year-to-life sentence of Judith Clark, the former Weather Underground radical who was convicted for her role in the infamous 1981 Brinks robbery in which two Nyack police officers and an armored truck driver were killed.

perhaps involvement in trying to overthrow the government
I truly believe that's his post-presidential plan.

Obama is like a ghost in the evening mist. So many details of his life are sealed and/or cloaked in shrouded mystery.

I know...I think this robbery is one of the main reasons why. How does a kid get such powerful connections so quickly? Joins a terrorist group, get on the inside, pulls the job, happens to be one that gets away. Keeps his mouth shut and is REWARDED with power, money and influence.

I remember this case fairly well. It happened when I had just entered graduate school, and seemed ironic to me because it brought back memories of the political violence of my undergraduate years, specifically of the Patricia Hearst case, which happened during my freshman year in college. It "seemed like old times," in a way, even though 1974 seemed a distant memory to me in 1981. I remember thinking "are those people still around," meaning the Weather Underground and the Black Liberation Army, which was formed by former members of the Black Panther Party.

Seems like they tried to pull off a robbery that was choreographed to look like something from a Hollywood movie, although it didn't have a movie ending. Real bullets caused the death of three innocent people and seriously wounding two others. That one of those killed was a Black police officer — the first African-American cop ever hired by the Nyack PD — only added to the nasty irony of the crime.

It seemed like they had come back, meaner and more violent than ever.

Not much of a fight between a young hood and a newly released middle age man. Punk will win! Death/murder rate will be high. Homeless - druggies are easy targets

I have a theory that Obama was involved in this crime as well. He was in the area at school. He knew Ayers. He was of the right political persuasion. His records of what he did at school are sealed. And there were several that escaped. This is payback for keeping her mouth shut for the last decade and you can bet there are financial rewards for her as well.

That's a fantastic theory, and would be a political scandal of historic proportions if it could be proved.

But it seems unlikely to me, not because Obama wouldn't have wanted to participate, but because (a) it would require secrecy on the part of so many people even after he became a household name all over the world, and (b) he's not smart enough or hard-working enough to have been much of a help to any sort of boots-on-the-ground action. I don't think the kind of badasses who did the Brink's robbery would have been much interested in help from Obama, who was all talk and no action back then, into doing drugs and boasting about all the big things he was going to do "from the inside."

My guess is they would have blown him off if he had tried to become involved. They all got convicted, so he wasn't able to help them very much. Only two of the defendants even tried to undertake a serious legal defense; one of them hired one of her father's law partners to defend her, but she got twenty years anyway. The other one (Samuel Brown) got 75 years to life. So Obama's "insider status" didn't get them much.

“I have a theory about many of these cases where criminals with long sentences are seemingly being released in large numbers.”

I have a theory too. There are one or two that he desperately wants freed for whatever reason. So he releases a few hundred. We have no way to know who really paid him the bribe, who was a Saudi buddy, who was a co-conspirator, or what.

Like a helo dropping a recon team and making several widely dispersed landings. You get to figure out where the team actually got off. Its not random that he is releasing so many, its a tactic.

But, in 1981 he was a smart assed 20 year old little Bolshevik. He probably was not yet aware what Ayers was going to put together for him 10 years later so he wouldn’t be thinking about that legacy so much yet.
I agree with you about his laziness, but there are lots of ways he could have participated without being an actual direct actor.
He could have hidden them away in a safe house. He could have been sent to scout the brinks activity at that location. He might have made them smores and hot chocolate.
remember he was a homo and a doper. He would do anything for cash and blow.

But he was a radical communist, in the right location and time. Sure is food for thought that he would have found them, because he sure found Bill Ayers.

Like when Clinton fired all the US Attorneys when there was only one he was really interested in.

“If I ran for office...there would be THOUSANDS of family, friends, former classmates, teammates, coworkers, and others who could speak of their experiences with me and simultaneously confirm my whereabouts. Not to mention the countless photographs that illustrate a clear timeline of my life.”

Which is precisely why I will never run for office.

“Man there was this one time that Lurker, Jim, and I were at this party and.....”

Game over.

Oh, I'm not denying it. There's no doubt in my mind that he could have been involved, and that he would have been involved if he had gotten the opportunity.

And he was in the area, and his record has been scrubbed and/or buried.

If it happened, I hope it comes out. Things of that sort almost always do, eventually. A lot of people would have known about it... sooner or later one of them will say something.

The perfectness of the deep-sixing of Obama's past record is really thought-provoking, I'll grant that. The fact that no one remembers even seeing him at Columbia during his time there makes me think maybe he wasn't really there.

If she were really remorseful, she would insist that she remain incarcerated her entire life.

Do the two dead guards have living relatives? Might the freed criminal have a little “accident” after her release?

It's just a variation on the "honor among thieves" trope.

Cuomo clearly recognizes a fellow-traveler when he sees one, and so he is just providing a 'professional courtesy' to one of his own.

Cuomo only made her eligible for parole in 2017. I’m hoping the parole board folds under tons of public pressure and turns her down.
