Self-Driving Cars Will Make Organ Shortages Even Worse
Slate ^ | December 30, 2016 | Ian Adams and Anne Hobson

Much has been said about the ways we expect our oncoming fleet of driverless cars to change the way we live—remaking us all into passengers, rewiring our economy, retooling our views of ownership, and reshaping our cities and roads.

They will also change the way we die. As technology takes the wheel, road deaths due to driver error will begin to diminish. It's a transformative advancement, but one that comes with consequences in an unexpected place: organ donation.

[Snip]

It's not difficult to do the math on how driverless cars could change the equation. An estimated 94 percent of motor-vehicle accidents involve some kind of a driver error. As the number of vehicles with human operators falls, so too will the preventable fatalities. In June, Christopher A. Hart, the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said, "Driverless cars could save many if not most of the 32,000 lives that are lost every year on our streets and highways." Even if self-driving cars only realize a fraction of their projected safety benefits, a decline in the number of available organs could begin as soon as the first wave of autonomous and semiautonomous vehicles hits the road—threatening to compound our nation’s already serious shortages.

Personally, I wouldn’t get in anything that “drives itself”.

Me either.

So more young deaths are good? No wonder they love gun control!

Not to be a kill-joy, but I don’t think most organ transplant needs come from auto accidents...but from organ specific diseases and congenital organ illnesses.

“the obvious solution would be to promote the idea of donating, so the pool of potential donors would be larger.”

Ever been in a commercial airplane? They spend the majority of the flight on autopilot.

“I can’t possibly see how self driving cars could work without specialized roads, there are just way way too many things that can go wrong.”

I can’t either. The complexity of what I do when I drive in heavy city traffic with daredevil teenagers in fast cars all around me is staggering. I guess it would work if every car on the road were computer controlled, but computers are never going to be perfect any more than their designers will be. There will always be mishaps.

A redesign of the roads would be the best in that case.

I’ve never been in a plane that has no human as it’s pilot.

Liberals are implacable. On purpose.

They cant ever really be happy because that means they are enjoying things as they are.

It goes against the hegelian dialectic of liberals. They love to be unhappy because it means they have something to fight against and put all their anger towards. They need Goldsteins to rail against, preferably fake ones.

Nah, if you get a Chinese liver transplant, you feel like you need another one in a few hours.

So did speed limits and drunk driving laws.

Anyway, self driving cars are stupid. You might as well take a bus or mass transit. That’s all they are basically anyway, a train with a private compartment.

That's not the way machine learning (AI) works. Mistakes are ID'd as errors, correct actions are ID'd as solutions.

Think about it.

I’m reminded of a good old joke:
A plane was once flying over an island when the passengers heard the pilot’s voice: “Ladies & Gentlemen, if you look on the right side of the plane, you’ll see an engine on fire. If you look on the left side, you’ll see a wing on fire. And if you look down, you’ll see me and my co-pilot in parachutes, waving at you. This is a recording.”

Of course nothing can go wrong with computers and microd digital sensing systems in a moving vehicle.

We have two Android Phones, two tablets, a Window 10 Laptop PC, a Chromebook, two printers, one on the cloud and one connected to the PC laptop, a semi smart tv and a PC monitor that can hdmi to the laptop or Chromebook, a Nest Thermometer, and my CPAP Dreamstation will supposedly a blue tooth data transfer.

I try to pay my bills electronically and do most of my shopping on line. I have Kindle books on the tablets, my phone, pc tablet and Chromebook. We stream Amazon Prime Tv, Acorn Tv, Roku and Sling.

Something goes down, doesn’t work or miss behaves everyday.

Throw a power failure into the mix, even more down stuff is down or misbehaves, acts up or shuts down.

Bright sun shining on my office impacts our Wifi system. Also, too much heat or cold impact all of the above.

If the above does happen in a nice, clean home with the nearest neighbor at least 100 yards away.

What will happen in a vehicle exposed to summer heat, winter cold, bright sun, heat off pavement/parking lot in the summer.

What are the possible negative impact of driving on roads that aren’t well paved to pay for illegals and just the vibrations being in any vehicle on the bad roads might have or impact any system in any vehicle.

AI can only use what’s programed into it. When it runs into something not in it’s database, this happens:

Exactly right. I don’t want my vehicle making any “decisions” for me. Some people simply cannot drive and if they want these features on their cars, that’s fine with me, but I’ll decide how fast I want to drive, where I want to go and when I want to stop.
