Following this morning's reports that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would recommend to Russian President Vladimir Putin a retaliation in kind, and expel 35 American diplomats, saying that “we cannot leave such acts unanswered. Reciprocity is part of diplomatic law" with Putin spokesman Peskov adding that "there is no doubt that Russia's adequate and mirror response will make Washington officials feel very uncomfortable as well", it was ultimately up to Putin to decide how to respond to the US.
Which he did on Friday morning, when in a stunning reversal, the Russian leader took the high road, and in a Kremlin statement said that, contrary to expectations, Russia won’t expel any Americans in retaliation to US moves, in a brutal demonstration of just how irrelevant Obama's 11th hour decision is for US-Russian relations.
In the statement Putin said that Russia won’t cause problems to U.S. diplomats or deport anyone, adding that Russia has the right to respond in tit-for-tat manner, but it will not engage in irresponsible diplomacy.
The punchline, however, was saved for what may be Russia's final slam of the debacle that is Obama's administration saying that "It’s a pity that the current U.S. administration is finishing their work in such a manner" saying that Russia refuses "

My take on Putin is that he is/was so disgusted with Obama/Clinton/Kerry - their corrupt, cowardly, inept attitude toward almost everything, that he has been looking forward to dealing with an honest adult after Jan. 20th. He knows Trump can undo most of the insanity Obama has forced on the world upon taking office.
Therefore he is right & smart to be patient for 3 more weeks. Allowing Obama to hamstring US/Russia relations would not be wise in the long run.
I believe the US & Russia need each other to fight the muslim menace. Europe has surrendered. Few nations remain that can be counted as reliable allies in this fight.

Yes, Putin played this situation in a strategic manner. Yes, Putin made Obama look small. But Putin is doing this for Putin's best interests. Never forget that. Do not idolize Putin.

This is what I'm talking about. Sure, Putin made Obama and crew look petty. That is not in doubt. But Putin is disgusted with the USA, not a single individual. Putin is not looking forward to better relations after January 20.
Look, Putin is a hell of a strategic player. America's policy position in favor of freedom is not something Putin admires. Putin is putting Russia's (and really his own) interests above all else. Democrat or Republican doesn't matter much to Putin. Putin only wants to diminish America's stature in the world. Understand that.

Putin did not need to outmaneuver these naive incomptents in the U.S. government. Only to ignore them , exercise great restraint against their provocations, and press on with taking care of his allies and his country’s national interests
I think what we may see in Syria over the next months could be a watershed in the system of alliances and policies in the Middle East, and fortunately we have one man coming into office who sees this as an opportunity not a threat
