Canceling the 787 order appears to be a good move by Delta as they are keeping their order for 120 of Boeing’s 737-900ERs.

The 737-900ERs are great planes, the newest variant of the 737, the best passenger aircraft ever built.

...

Around 1970 Boeing considered selling the rights to the 737 to the Japanese to help pay for the 747 program.

The 737-900ER is not the newest variant. The 737-MAX is the newest variant, with the newest engines for improved fuel savings.

Delta is buying the previous generation, part of the Next Generation series. Most likely because that's how long Delta's order has been on the books.

Oddly, Delta is also buying the A321ceo instead of the newer A321neo (new engine option) that also have the latest generation of engines for improved fuel usage.
