The public schools in Alexandria and Chevy Chase are okay.

Montgomery and Fairfax counties have excellent public school systems as well. These are very high income counties, full of high-achieving kids of high-achieving parents. Not every school is uniformly great, but the systems are pretty solid overall and have enough centers of excellence that most parents can find the right niche. These counties are also well served by very well regarded private schools.

There are some other communities in the DC metro area in which the public schools are struggling. This probably correlates with something, but I can't quite put my finger on it at the moments ....

Picking the right neighborhood in which to live is important, as it is in many other cities. School choice could change this fairly rapidly (5-10 years). I hope Betsy DeVos is successful.
