The Wermacht actually had some sane leaders, including Rommel, who knew when to retreat and when to fight. In the end, retreat to the West was the unofficial policy as they didn’t want to be captured and killed by the Soviets (whose lead forces were often Mongolians and other Asian peoples from east of the Ob River who, as a woman liberated from a work camp across from Sachsenhausen Concentration camp said, “were only interested in eating and raping” in the liberation of German.
