Another day, another shot across the bow from Donald Trump aimed squarely at China.
Having already participated (and in the case of one, precipitated) two mini diplomatic snafus with Beijing in just the past two weeks, Trump is sending a clear message to Beijing that US-China trade under his administration will be anything but business as usual, by creating a National Trade Council inside the White House to oversee industrial policy and has decided to appoint a hard core China hawk to run it.
According to the FT, which broke the news, Trump has chosen Peter Navarro, a Harvard-trained economist and one-time daytrader, to head the NTC. The author of books such as "Death by China" and "Crouching Tiger: What Chinas Militarism Means for the World" has for years warned that the US is engaged in an economic war with China and should adopt a more aggressive stance a message that the president-elect sold to voters across the US during his campaign.
Speaking to the American public, Trump said I read one of Peters books on Americas trade problems years ago and was impressed by the clarity of his arguments and thoroughness of his research, Trump said. He has presciently documented the harms inflicted by globalism on American workers, and laid out a path forward to restore our middle class.

If you go to China and visit the stores you realize how few US products make it onto the shelves. If they are there, they have had to pay a huge tariff and are not price competitive with other products. 10% is a good opening volley.
About time. So, so glad the Clintons, Bushes, and Obama are gone.
Good deal.
China and the rest of the world need to realize that we won’t be trampled over. It’s time for fair trade.
Most of the items are knock offs as well
Time to short Walmart and Harbor Freight?
China has walked all over us economically, because there has been no resistance at all.
Their economy is highly dependent on our market, and they are very vulnerable right now.
A “trade war” with China might just be a simple trade slap down.
The big test will be to see if all of the trade deals and international trade bodies established can effectively neuter the exercise of national sovereignty by the USA. I don’t think so.
And to build the Mexican Wall, Trump can use all the bricks that Obama and the MSM will be shitting over this!!
My post from a similar thread for the sake of consolidation:
Hey Chyna, this is what real negotiations will look like for the next eight years. No more pussies smiling at you from across the table. We will talk about real things, and trade on equitable terms.
I recall that back in the 80's, Wal-Mart advertised that all their products were made in the USA. I wouldn't sell them short. They buy in such bulk and average a 40% markup, they'll find other suppliers.
40%? Oh, that’s funny. Try 65%.
Peter Navarro is right about China.
BRAVO, Trump!
Best election ever!
“...the new office is also likely to be seen as controversial by mainstream economists, many in the business community and pro-trade Republicans.”
“pro-trade Republicans”
That nonsensical line always amazes me. Even people with a room temperature IQ are in favor of trade. Who is not in favor of trade? I love trade. If we all had a bottomless market to absorb our manufacturing and commodities, we would all be wealthy.
The simple concept of “fair trade” is explanation enough. Nations have historically sought to get the upper hand in trade deals, until certain people in the United States, globalists, got their noses out of joint because of the prosperity of the American middle class. These people, using insane trade deals, have successfully cut American wages by half. It now takes both a man and his wife working to earn what the man use to earn by himself.
Yeah, but he went to Harvard.
