Maybe it fell out of his pocket?

Have you ever dropped your ID in a car and then took several minutes to hunt for it because it fell in some cranny? I’m thinking that’s what happened to this guy’s ID. And he didn’t have time to look for it, and maybe did not realize it had fallen from his pocket. Especially if it fell out while the driver was still fighting for his life.

Best laid plans gang aft agley, especially when you confront a human being struggling for his life. I think their are two quite plausible explanations, yours, that he lost his ID in a struggle with the driver, or that the ID is a red herring.
