Who would have thought a butter knife could become the center of a school controversy? Last month, officials at Silver Trail Middle School near Miami, Florida, suspended an 11-year-old honors student for violating a county policy strictly prohibiting weapons on campus. The girls weapon of choice: a butter knife fit for a toddler. To highlight the dangers of having this dull knife on campus, the police noted to state prosecutors that the girl used it to cut a peach. Such is the folly of overcriminalization: Every minor mishap gets crammed into the criminal justice system when it could be easily resolved by other means.

Come on down. The fight with the School District can use your help Superman.
And not sure what feral hominids is but yeah there are plenty of kids causing problems. Not a good elementary school. The middle school is downright scary. Teachers call police to their rooms, parents are told not to confront the gang kids as it could be dangerous.
So, like I said, come on over and let the school board know you want the kids to be allowed to carry a knife. The sounds you will hear after your public comment will be wild roaring laughter. Seriously. In other words, you need to get real.
I totally agree.
I don't want to "fix" your precious "School District". I want to ABOLISH your precious "School District". It, and all its fundamentally broken type across the fruited plain, are unfixable. You can't solve the problem by tweaking bureaucratic rules. The bureaucrats like the rules, and (protestations to the contrary notwithstanding) they like the hordes of feral hominids. They like having power over YOU. The feral hominids, and the "necessary" bureaucratic rules give them power over YOU.
YOU need to get real. Strike the problem at its root. Abolish government schools. Privatize the lot, from K to PhD. Power to the People!
But I repeat myself ...
See #27 and #65.
“A high school cafeteria brawl just broke out in a Maryland high school in Capitol Heights.”
Capitol Heights is in the District of Columbia not in Maryland.
But there were plenty of fights between blacks and Hispanics in the high school my kids attended.
Is there a reason you haven’t removed your kids?
Did you forget the “/s”?
It was never great. It's original purpose was to produce a nation of progressive drones. It has half succeeded. Please read John Taylor Gatto’s history of education in America. It's free on the Internet.
And...We starved the government indoctrination camps of approximately 1 MILLION dollars in revenue that would have gone into their coffers but didn't.
Now that's 1 **MILLION** dollars of power.
Gee! A million here, a million there, pretty soon that adds up to **real** money.
There are schools in this nation that are soooooo horrific it would be better for the child to NEVER attend! Illiteracy and innumeracy can be fixed. Adults do it all the time. Dead or permanently disabled can't be.
I cannot even believe we are having this conversation on FR. Something really wrong with our society if we cannot have a butter knife to use with fruit in an educational setting. Time to find another school setting if it's this bad.
Be sure and let us know when your accomplish that goal.
That is a fix. And Congratulations to you. That is a lot of work to do that, as I'm sure you know. Actually very good your dedication to your kids. Really very impressive.
Ideas are the most powerful force in the universe. That we and the firmament exist at began as an idea in the mind of God.
So.....Intractable institutions can unravel seemingly overnight. Some examples are The Reformation, The American Revolution, Jim Crow, the spread of literacy with the invention of the printing press....etc.
Compulsory, government owned and run K-12 socialist-entitlement schools are NOT special. Privatization of schooling is a good idea. Don't be surprised if it unravels overnight.
Really very impressive.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Actually, it isn’t impressive. Ordinary parents have, and are, doing it all over America. It’s not special.
I read your post and my response to my husband. He quipped, “It's like sex.” :)
Yep! Homeschooling is that common and ordinary.
