His grandfather got deported from Germany. As a young man, he left to dodge the draft. After he made his fortune in America, he returned to retire, but they “punished” him by deporting him.

Einstein, Bethe, ... another in the long list of people driven out of Germany who benefited America.

We have all benefited greatly from our ancestors immigrating to the US. It was not a trivial trip and most of the time it was a one way trip with no hope of ever returning.

Desperation and then hope drove these hearty folks and they gained an appreciation for freedom and Liberty that we have forgotten and some of us now take for granted. They knew how bad it could be because the experienced it first hand.

I do like the stories like Trump’s grandfather. Europeans think too highly of themselves sometimes maybe because they are old and have a long history. But a lot of that history was not pleasant for the peasants and lower classes and it is nice to remind them that people of great talent (and determination) came to the United States and became successful when there was no hope for them in Europe.
