After Aleppo, Idlib likely the next bloody battleground in Syria conflict

The battle for Aleppo has gripped the world, but it is hardly the only active front across war-torn Syria. One of the next targets for the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad will probably be the heartland of rebel territory, the neighboring province of Idlib.

The province west of Aleppo is a stronghold of al-Qaida’s Syria affiliate and is now also packed with tens of thousands of rebels, many of them evacuated from other parts of the country, making it likely to be an even more bloody theater than Aleppo.

Idlib has direct links to the Turkish border, and is located only a few kilometers north of Hama, a central province and key point for defending Assad’s coastal strongholds and nearby Russian military bases.

Asked where he will turn to next, Assad has suggested his first priority, after fortifying the area around Aleppo city, would be Idlib.

“Identifying which city comes next depends on which city contains the largest number of terrorists and which city provides other countries with the opportunity to support them logistically,” he told Russian media outlets in an interview in Damascus this week.

Looks like Russia is doing what the west refuses to do.

I hope the Russians kill many more jihadi animals, Obama trained or not.

Nope. Are these articles totally source-free? The next target is the Damascus suburbs known as Eastern Ghouta.

Syria’s strategy seems to be to establish itself in all of the population centers, leaving ISIS with oil-rich countryside it can’t do anything with.

So we and our democratically motivated allies have lost Aleppo to the Russians and Syrians.

Why is it that losing feels like winning?

It’s because it is sort of like the russian front in WWII. Islam is the greater evil and it is getting routed by the Russians.

It’s one of those “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” things.

Nature abhors a vacuum. Obama’s leadership vacuum allowed Putin and Russia to fill the void. The president of the US is no longer the world’s most powerful position. Most people don’t really see it, but the US is no longer the city on the hill. It is just another nation - as I suspect Obama wanted. I don’t know that Trump is powerful enough to undo that. We’ll see.

But, truth be told, I don’t need the U.S. to be the most powerful nation. I just want it to be strong enough to defend itself, champion of individual freedom and homogeneous.

At this point homogeneity is a tall order.

So you are a rascist, sexist, irredeemable deplorable, and a basement dwelling social media nerd to boot.

Yeah, I agree. But a guy can dream. :-)

I consider multiculturalism to be evil and am not ashamed to say so to any liberal who will listen. There is nothing wrong with living your life around people that, at least regarding the “big” things, are people like you. It’s the reason people self segregate when left to their own devices.

Assad & Putin should be very wary of the Turk at their back in northern Aleppo Provence.
