Chinese real estate billionaire Chau Chak Wing has launched legal action against Fairfax Media, alleging he was defamed in a report that insinuated he had bribed UN officials and had built his business empire by bribing Australian government officials.

Mr Chau, represented by litigator Mark O’Brien, has been one of several figures under considerable scrutiny this year over concerns about the influence of overseas business interests in Australia, and a rising volume of political donations.

The litigation centres on an article published in The Sydney Morning Herald in which it is alleged that Mr Chau is a businessman known to US authorities against whom legal action could be taken as part of an investigation into a bribery racket involving Antigua’s representative to the UN, John Ashe.
