People get addicted to prescription opioid pain medications and eventually switch to heroin because it is so much cheaper. Heroin is relatively cheap compared to the recent past, but it's still far more expensive than prescription drugs. They switch because the DEA has made it very difficult for doctors to prescribe painkillers for any length of time.
