His “role” was to pretend to be Bill O’Reilly, and his goal was to make a bigger ass out of O’Reilly than he supposedly already is.

Colbert was pathetic enough not to realize that the O’Reilly schtick just wasn’t very funny, and without it he had nothing, nothing at all.
