The family were Catholics, rather than the usual atheists these days, and the girl had worked with a project to help the Catholic Church in Bangladesh.
Quite possibly the poor girl was a much better Christian than I am.

The Ladenburger family and the Catholic Church in general, and Europe, are forgetting the principle of subsidiarity - handle problems at the closest, most local, lowest level possible.
Family, neighborhood, town, state, country....
Helping the Catholic Church do its work in Bangladesh is an example of subsidiarity. Encouraging young men to uproot themselves and destabilize other cultures is its opposite.
You have the right to be a missionary or charity worker and take your chances on a martyr’s death. Maybe you can even take your children with you. But you don’t have the right to endanger your neighbor’s children.
I’ve come to the conclusion that many people are far more concerned about their image than their country, and their babies. They wouldn’t want to be seen as some idiot bumpkin who fights for country and family.
