Right before the election we were told repeatedly that Hillary had a firewall in the electoral college and that Trump had a narrow path to victory. There were no arguments against the electoral college then because they were confident of victory.
Democrats start with a free 104 EVs from California, New York, and Illinois. They don't have to campaign in those states, yet they provide more than a third of the EVs needed to win. If Hillary couldn't win with that advantage the problem is not with the electoral college.

Even in those states, the entire margin - and more - comes from Los Angeles County, the Bay Area, Cook County and the five boroughs of New York City.
Take those areas out and even those states likely go red.
