See if you can find reruns of “Lassie” and “Rin Tin Tin” on cable.
Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse wrote the book for this 1936 show, which ran for about six months, and starred Ethel Merman, Bob Hope and Jimmy Durante. The plot was ridiculous, ending with the Supreme Court declaring a law unconstitutional because it might benefit the people. Only three songs survived from this show, and Cole diagnosed it perfectly: Sophisticated allusions are good for about six weeks; more fun, but only for myself and about eighteen other people, all of whom are first-nighters anyway. Polished, urbane and adult play writing in the musical field is strictly a creative luxury.
Ethel Merman and Bob Hope introduced this tune in the show. The two never recorded it together, which is a pity. This is Ethel singing it with the intro that Cole wrote for it in the show.
