I had a college professor whose theory was that drug laws (The Harrison Act 1914) was in respond to anti-asian racism. When opium became popular white men became angry that there women were hanging out at opium dens and congregating with Asians. Maybe, maybe not.

I think the real reason for the negative attitude toward Asians was that they worked cheap, undercutting the wages of white Americans. That’s a sure recipe for working up resentment.
