Theres been a lot of focus about whether California can secede. The better question, perhaps, is, why should it?
Think about it. If you live in California, you already live with silly taxes that you dont have to live with in other parts of the country, beyond the infamous, highly-progressive state income tax. For instance, do you want to bag your groceries when you check out at the grocery store? In California, you have to either bring your own bags, or declare how many the store provides for you, because youre charged $0.10 for each one. Its a state-sponsored sin tax for your wicked destruction of the planet (or the state is saving you and the planet from your own non-biodegradable plastic gluttony, however you wish to frame it). Want to buy a 2-liter container of soda? Well, that will also be another $0.10 tax per unit. Consider it the sin tax for your wanton desire for sugary drinks. Fill the coffers, Californians. The highest, most progressive state income tax and oppressive business taxes are not enough to satiate the California governments need for your money, collected to absolve you of your sins, but practically applied in the states redistributionist endeavors.
And guess what? All of that is absolutely fine in the context of our constitutional republic. You have the right to live in any other state in this country, and you might find all of that to be stupid and ridiculous. I live here in California, and also find it utterly ridiculous. But Californias people chose to enact these aforementioned taxes by recent popular ballot initiatives.

Why? Because they’re butt-hurt.
I am okay with it. They need to pay up their share of the 20+ trillion debt first.
Actually, I think that we should do everything possible to help them.
How many times did this guy use the word ‘silly’?
We fled California in 2015, best thing we ever did.
I realize the writer lives with all that Nitwittery and I feel for him, sorta, yet I’m still happy that so many so-called “progressive” congregate in that golden land ... far, far away from me.
What’s sad is so many that have left Californicatia take their DemWit politics with them... vote for the same crap and “foul” their new nest with the same policies. Then when their new state in ruined (think Colorado)... they move and ruin another one. Kinda the liberal version of “slash and burn” farming.
The stupid vote their “progressive” policies, suffer from it... seek to escape, and screw up their new place. Such is the definition of insanity. Build a wall on the California border!!! Make Jerry Brown pay for it!!!
Just hand the whole state over to Mexico, within 18 months all the libs will be begging to be taken back.
( this plan would only work if we built a border wall around California )
California lives off the benefits of the printed, unbacked US Dollar, issued by our unconstitutional Federal Reserve, which is (temporarily anyway) accepted as the world’s reserve currency. Our completely unbacked currency also allows massive borrowing by Fed.gov, which supports California’s asinine progressivism and massive nanny state.
That would all go away if CA became independent.
If they were to secede, it would be interesting to see what kind of Military they set up to protect their new country. Would the far left loons out there even allow California to have a military?
Shhh don’t tell them. They NEED to leave, it’s important.
California....please vote to secede from the USA. Make Obama & Clinton your leaders!!! In ten years, Mexico will have defeated you, and taken over California. They will then throw out all American citizens and all illegals into the Pacific Ocean!!! Praise be to Californians....the Democrat, dummies, they all are!!!
That is an excellent question.
If they were serious about secession they would try to amend the US Constitution.
The big advantage would be that Californians would no longer have to pay federal income tax, but I’m sure the state would have to raise taxes as well.
A major downside would be a big loss to the state if all the defense contractors move out and military bases are shut down.
I said in a California only thread:
1. Economy
2. Security
3. Immigration
All the above are not major issues for the majority of Californians. They are not feeling the pressure that the rest of the country feels, or not as much.
It does not mean they should secede either.
Status quo politically is OK.
Abandoned by everyone- NRA and the Republican party are both about as useful as the teats on a boar here.
They would be like Canada and Mexico.
Spend next to nothing, and hope that proximity to the U.S. will make their defense OUR defense too.
IMHO, the US should annex Baja California. All of the “progressives” can move there, then build the wall.
