NOV. 28, 2016. Democrats Clinch A Supermajority In Both Houses of The California Legislature After Josh Newman Wins State Senate Seat
Democrat Josh Newman has defeated Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) to win the race for the 29th Senate District, giving Democrats in the Legislature a two-thirds majority in both houses.
The Associated Press called the race Monday evening for Newman, who had been steadily gaining ground as provisional and absentee ballots were counted over the last three weeks.
I am immensely honored to have earned the trust and support of so many of my neighbors, whove placed their faith and trust in me as their next state senator," Newman said in a statement, crediting his supporters with helping counter what he called the "obscene levels of spending" in the race.
Democrats had already secured a supermajority in the state Assembly with the defeat of Republican legislators Young Kim (R-Fullerton), Eric Linder (R-Corona) and David Hadley (R-Manhattan Beach).
With a supermajority, a political party can raise taxes, place measures on the statewide ballot, enact laws immediately with an urgency clause and override a governors veto.
In a statement, Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon congratulated Newman on his "clear and impressive victory."

FR’s saying fence off CA or let them leave the Union are so short sighted.
CA is almost the whole western border of the Union.
If they were no longer part of The USofA our national security would be in greater risk. Having our Nation from sea to shining sea is part of our defense.
Please consider bigger picture before emotionally, impulsively writing off CA.
I agree. When and where do you stop giving up/away parts of the country?
I suppose losing Toyota was not enough for the fools. That nice big facility across the freeway from Goodyear in Torrance is about to be totally vacated for the new place about to be finished in Plano!
Just think of all the satellite businesses who will suffer the exodus of Toyota. I know just how big that place is as a company I do design work for is doing all of the lighting. And it is all LED where it can be used.
We have lots of FRiends here who know just how bad it is getting, the least of which is the founder of this site. Maybe if h would relocate to Texas or Florida the cost of doing business would diminish somewhat. No state income tax in either and both a in a competition as to who can pull more out of Kalifornja than the other.
Then they can start to goosestep all over the those that opposed them!!! Welcome to Kalifornia!!! When they get that state destroyed they will start heading East to infect the rest of this Nation
They’re now in full command of a sinking ship.
California is going to secede,,,,,,,,, when? Please make it fast.
Poor California.
In a one party state ALL voters are disenfranchised. The California “primary” is “ranked-choice”. So they got two Democrats running against each other in the Senate general (banana republic stuff!). “Ranked choice” voting is designed to disenfranchise voters and create the one-party state. Such is California. Hillary’s national popular vote lead is ALL California... if one is Republican or independent, they now have NO say in California politics. Ironically, neither do Democrats... for if they change their minds and seek change, they now have no place to go. Such in the anti-democracy of “progressives”.
Now unhinged braindead liberals want California to secede from the union if so the red counties in the north and west will seek to secede from the California, to form the state of Jefferson. Red counties in the South of Oregon also would like to join the state of Jefferson. Then California can complete the transition to Mexifornicatia. Then Trump must extend the wall up through Nevada and make Mexifornicatia pay for it!
Excellent! Nothing begins the rot inside politics quite so fast as super-majorities who begin to pass legislation that is more and more extreme. Eventually the house of cards falls.
Why does a state with a Democratic Governor care about a SuperMajority?
