Amherst, Mass. (WWLP) At least one thousand veterans gathered in Amherst this afternoon to protest the removal of the American flag at Hampshire College. 22news spoke to protesters about why they strongly disagreed with the colleges decision.
Freedom is not free. Thats the lesson that hundreds of veterans, their families and friends and other local residents hoped to teach students at Hampshire College Sunday afternoon.
Jerry Maguire, Veteran said, They took down my flag, they have a right to that, Im here to defend their right to do that but I want them to understand how bad that hurts me.
Hundreds gathered to show their support of the American flag and what it stands for after the College removed the flag on campus earlier this week following the presidential election results. A decision by the college that outraged many.
David Soucy, a Veteran told 22News, I was in Iraq 18 months. I got hurt, spent time at Walter Reed. I came home and theres no way Ill let anyone take down the flag, no way. It means a lot to me and my brothers.
People came from all over New England to attend this protest. The news of the flag being taken down upset Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno who stood in solidarity with veterans Sunday.
Mayor Domenic Sarno mentioned, For the students here and the president and board of trustees have risen from what the veterans sacrificed, this flag and not to fly the flag on this campus if you were in some other countries around the world it would be handled very, very differently.
The protests remained peaceful with the exception of one incident, when the protesters went to take a group photo one man sat in the middle of everyone making obscene gestures.
That man wouldnt confirm if he was a student. The colleges president did not attend the demonstration.
i hope some group decides to walk around daily with waving American flags on campus....
....and some students join them
People do not know the pressures veterans experience on campus. I was laughed at by an adviser when I declared my major, English lit and comp. I was told by a professor that he was surprised a Marine could understand literature (I pointed out to him that if he had said female, Black, Indian, homosexual or any other group that he may well be out of a job.) People treat you as though you are just out of mental health care. Everyone thinks you are suffering from PTSD and that you have killed thousands. You say little, if anything. You keep your head down and earn your degree. You are slapped in the face at nearly every turn. No one feels a need to check their opinion when speaking around veterans. The schools acccept all types of government funds and support and yet piss on those and symbols of those who work to ensure that they live freely and safely. It is shameful. Any school that refuses to fly the flag should be denied all federal funding. Veterans should take their tuition dollars elsewhere.
They should go put the flag back up...or block access to the campus until it is put p
back up.
The administrator who did this is a chickenshite. Instead of dealing with the problem he slaps everyone in the face.
You could also have pointed out to him the truth of the statement that ‘those who can, do and those who can’t teach.’ These snowflakes are simply intimidated by you; they’ve never done anything in their worthless lives except peer review some useless research that nobody will read. Keep your head up and your eyes focused on the back of their skulls full of mush.
“....and some students join them”
Probably MORE than some, given that Massachusetts is essentially Soviet territory! ;)
Hampshire started as the most liberal college in the area in 1970 during the height of the hippie era. It started as a pass-fail college. Liberal students were drawn to it.
#7 re the reply, “Those who do, can. Those who can’t, teach”. Great answer but one must do a diligent background search of the target to see if they did serve or not.
If not, then it’s open Turkey season on them.
[This is a tactic many of us have been using since the late 60’s, those of us who were in Vietnam, Cambodia, and/or Laos. I was a journalist in SVN and Cambodia so chewing up the great uneducated leftists was fun, fun, fun. Gained some street creds with my classmates and listeners].
And when someone criticizes our liberating Iraq from Saddam, I say, talk to my son, “WHO WAS THERE”.
Silence is “a winner” when it comes from the Left.
When we still had the draft some elites served in the military and it helped them see reality.
Schools like this exist on government subsidies.
Time to cut them loose.
yup, Hampshire has always had a more concentrated Libtard population than just about any US campus. Founded by Libtards, for Libtards. I doubt that Hampshire grads are worth a damn for anything except protesting, doing drugs, and/or getting laid.
We had a slight variation on that.
Those who can, do.
Those that cant do, teach.
Those that cant teach, teach teachers.
Cudos for you sticking with your goal. These people are pathetic and you are 100% correct, they would be out of a job but since you are an accepted enemy, a veteran, you are fair game. Keep up the good work, stay strong, and we very much appreciate your service. Have a cold one on me.
I agree totally. When I was attending TAMU and someone found out I had been in the Navy, immediately I was considered to be a whore. I mean, that’s why women join any service, right?
And it didn’t stop there...as I finished my DVM and then my PhD and then became a faculty member and was asked to be part of various committees, several faculty said they knew I got the coveted position as a committee member because I had gone to bed with the President of the University. I almost upchucked.
Women are badly treated overall in the USA sociologically and monetarily. Maybe we ought to do something about that...unfortunately I wasn’t very successful as the Lone Ranger. Being called a windger isn’t too nice, either.
Do you have any idea the cost of Kleenex that would be incurred? How can you be so heartless. Ungrateful little snots will be collapsing everywhere. ;-) Where do I sign up?
If that went on at Texas A & M, one of the most conservative campuses in the country, I can’t even imagine how bad it must be at places like Cal or Harvard.
