The Faure is clever, but the Schubert is a wonderful satire on “Erl King.” His death was such a loss.

This 1961 recording speeds it up tremendously, and Al’s phrasing is exceptional. He holds that long note for 17 – count ‘em! – 17 seconds pianissimo before the end. What breath control!
