Personally, I don’t mind having minorities playing traditional “white” roles or white historical characters. Sometimes it adds an interesting twist on a story. But, as always, the material has to be good and original. Simply putting a black guy in a white role with bad writing isn’t going to make the story better.
We need a play about Jackie Robinson with a white guy playing the lead.
And one about Malcom X using a white guy.
I’ll wait.
Vomit
LOL, wait until they cast Chris Farley as MLK in the upcoming “MLK” film...
I remember watching a high school production of Les Miserables, with an Asian kid cast in the lead role. And the guy did a good job, and I understand that it’s just a high school performance, and I had no desire to deny the Asian kids in the school the chance to star on the stage if they so desired, and all that . . . but I must admit, it really did take me out of the story.
I strongly dislike the idea of casting real, historical characters as anything other than what they actually were. Alexander Hamilton was a white man, and he should be portrayed by no one else except for white men. Likewise, Martin Luther King was a black man, and he should be portrayed by no one else except for black men. And so on.
It won’t catch on. Paying audiences are largely white and getting the whites have had their fill of such PC garbage.
