A top advisor to Donald Trump on tech policy matters proposed all but abolishing the nation's telecom regulator last month, foreshadowing possible moves by the president-elect to sharply reduce the Federal Communications Commission's role as a consumer protection watchdog.
In an Oct. 21 blog post, Mark Jamison, who on Monday was named one of two members of Trump's tech policy transition team, laid out his ideal vision for the government's role in telecommunications, concluding there is little need for the agency to exist.
"Most of the original motivations for having an FCC have gone away," Jamison wrote. "Telecommunications network providers and [Internet service providers] are rarely, if ever, monopolies."
The FCC declined to comment for this story, but its current leadership has disagreed strongly with that analysis. Its Democratic chairman, Tom Wheeler, has spoken of an Internet service "duopoly" in much of the country that limits competition. And he has compared telecommunications to the rail and telegraph networks of the 19th century, calling for new rules of the road as the Internet becomes the dominant communications platform of the 21st century.

Like I say, Coase notwithstanding, property rights are figured out very quickly in free markets. Ask the 49ers.
The FCC role is to ensure “equal access” for Facebook, Google, Apple etc. They will continue to do the bidding of the content providers.
While the carriers labor away at their 2% margin on investment and are still forced to allow any competitor to use THEIR capital infrastructure to earn money without real investment. Or expertise.
Additionally, the carriers are disincentivized from investing to bring the most advanced of technologies...in fact precluded from doing so...which would allow of full convergence of transport technologies.
A single, nationwide network would be far more efficient, ripe for development, than the 3 independent networks in place today...TV, Internet, Telephone.
and wow the FCC has been so successful at keeping the filth off the airwaves, give ‘em a raise — NOT.
Never has this country seen a time with so much filth and lgbt garbage on the set as today. If the FCC can’t keep the public airwaves ‘moral family friendly’ then fire them all.
You got that 100% correct! They make their own laws through regs.
Absolutely. We can reduce all of our alphabet agencies by half and have nothing but positive results. Heck, if we just eliminate the part of each bureau that politicizes we’ll be ahead.
You could turn all materials over to the ARRL and make them a quasi-government bureau. Maybe they’ll finally do something about 14.313.
One, of many!
Roger on that. Been on since ‘63 and the FCC is the one to coordinate frequency allocations as there are international aspects involved. Not a simple free market answer. CUL SK
Focus Donald. EPA/Dept of Education/Department of Commerce gone in 90 days. Then focus on FCC.
But the FCC should not care about what goes over those airwaves, the allocation aspect is what they should be doing.
40 and 80? They probably have a imported plasma TV with zero shielding. They throw out enough RF to give the viewer a tan.
About the only thing the FCC comes even close to doing well is frequency allocation, though even that has issues. It could be handled with a handful of people in some cubicle somewhere.
Getting a HAM license is incredibly easy. You don't even have to know code anymore. A couple of 2-meter handhelds would reach further than you'd likely need.
we don’t need the EPA.
I s’pose there is an argument for the FDA...foods and drugs cross state borders. And there is a vested national interest in having safe foods and drugs...but the agency should restrict itself to enforcing LAWS passed by the Congress.
“...and most of that money was paid out in CASH.”
Well, that seems to be the problem. The cash was stolen.
Trump with Carson can drain the swamp in that agency.
What about ‘Net Neutrality?’
It needs to be eliminated, along with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Alas, when you pull up an ugly weed, if you leave any part of it behind it will eventually grow back.
