Caprylic acid and undecylenic acid in addition to limiting sugars can take care of candida.

Probiotics also need to be taken to repopulate the gut and control the candida growth.
Saccharomyces boulardii https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3296087/ added to the standard acidophyllis strains normally available in store bought brands.

(Stay away from webmd.com and similar pharma and allopathic med establishment websites for real information on supplementation or natural remedies. They’re like the NYT, Wapo, CNN, etc, of the medical establishment. Can say nothing good unless it’s big pharma and AMA endorsed.)

Aside from the fact that a lot for sugar is just bad for you, there is a lot of evidence that Alzheimer’s might be a diabetes type illness, a metabolic type ossicle exacerbated by being a sugar burner rather than a fat burner (humans can run on either).

And mom is obese. Her caregivers for the past three years never fought hard enough to get her to walk. I endure her ire and even have been hit, but I get her out there walking. They let her eat cereal as soon as she woke up. I hide sweet carbs from her so she can’t just go and stuff herself before I’m up.

With all that said, all I am trying to do is to limit the UNNOTICED sugars so that she can have a couple of treats each day. I always give her a dessert after dinner. She is in ecstasy when I do, thanks me so profusely. So in order to let her have her dessert, I give her water to drink rather than juice or sweet tea. We might have roast beef with pickles — no bread — for lunch, etc. she doesn’t miss that stuff but I know she would miss her dessert. She deserves that happiness.

Completely agree with everything you’ve said. She does have patches of candida especially when she is in other people’s care because they let her eat junk. She actually has LESS OVERALL SUGARS with me, even though I give her her beloved desserts. I make chia pudding with a bit of raw honey, I make gelatin with fruit and fruit juice (she loooooved jello - that stuff is poison!). And we make cookies from unenriched flours sometimes, or a spot of chocolate. So she doesn’t eat bread or buns or juice or sweet tea or soda.

She can’t take big pills. I have s. Boulardi capsules but she couldn’t get them down. I make my own kombucha (she will drink a tiny bit) and fermented veggies but she seems to hate those. I made a fermented cranberry chutney and she will eat that.

By the way, just cause you sound like me and I love to find new healthy foods or supplements that actually work, I’m taking serropeptase — check it out. It is amazing, from silk worms, and it can reduce scar tissue in wounds and aches and generally give great movement back from sore joints etc. I’m seeing a lot of improvement especially from the soreness you can get sleeping. Thanks so much for the advice.

I fantasize about mom going keto but I can’t achieve it. I have 4 kids living here too, it would be too hard to police her.

I think it was relatively uncommon until our society switched to a diet based on starches and processed foods, plus people of her generation did not live as long (on average) so there was not time for so much of it to develop.

I never heard the term “Alzheimer’s” as a kid growing up in the 60’s, but I heard “hardening of the arteries,” which was more likely talking about vascular dementia.

Check out Xylitol. Tastes great but doesn’t have the diabetic problems of regular sugar. I like it on my bran flakes. BIL likes it in his coffee.

I’m taking S Boulardi now after a course of antiobiotics, plus the caprylic acid to make sure the candida is kept in check.

I tried serrapeptase several years ago but didn’t notice any appreciable difference in anything. Now having some old age joint aches and such, so I’ll probably get some more and see if I notice a diff now.

Good luck with your mom.
