Comedian Ellen DeGeneres was praised by the US president for her influence on the gay rights movement as she received the country's highest civilian honour. Celebrities including Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and Michael Jordan were also among the 21 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Barack Obama said it was easy to forget the risk Ellen De Generes took to come out as gay in 1997. He said her bravery helped "push our country in the direction of justice". "It's easy to forget now, when we've come so far... just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago," he said during the award ceremony at the White House. "What an incredible burden that was to bear - to risk your career like that - people don't do that very often. And then, to have the hopes of millions on your shoulders."
The award, which recognises contributions to United States culture, security and international interests, is the highest honour a civilian can receive, alongside the Congressional Gold Medal, a similar accolade awarded by the US Congress. "These are folks who have helped make me who I am,'' Obama said. "Everybody on this stage has touched me in a very powerful, personal way, in ways that they probably couldn't imagine."
Honourees from the entertainment world included actors Tom Hanks, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford and Cicely Tyson, as were musicians Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross. From the sporting world, former basketball superstars Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan - who President Obama jokingly referred to as "the guy from Space Jam"- were awarded the medal, alongside sports broadcaster Vin Scully.
Bill and Melinda Gates were awarded for their philanthropic work through their charitable foundation.

I wonder how much each recipient donated to Obama’s campaign?
“”Everybody on this stage has touched me in a very powerful, personal way, in ways that they probably couldn’t imagine.”
Sorry Barry, we don’t want to even imagine how much they touched you.
Michael Jordan is a class act all the way around. Obummer was surrounded by his greatness. But I wonder if Michael was embarrassed by Ellen’s award and what Obama said about her.
So now the Presidential Medal of Freedom awards are just as much of a joke as the Nobel Peace Prize.
Ellie will donate cash prizes to the Save the Whales research foundation.
Like evil Herr Doktor Mengele and twins, lezbos everywhere are itching to learn how they grew four foot tongues and learned to breathe through blowholes.
That medal now obviously means absolutely nothing - Like Obunghole’s Nobel peace prize.
“Obama lauds awards on celeb Hollyweird trash. Classy.”
obummer cheapens everything he touches and makes it useless, just like he is.
“An award for what? Say that again.”
Fundraising and bundling for the Party.
The interests of the Nation and the Party are one.
“Freedom” is to serve the Party.
The awardees have done so, well above the required dollar threshold, and they are model citizens.
They are the Party heroes of demonstrating the qualities desired in the “New Citizen” which the Party seeks to create (in every instance) - unquestioningly loyal to any Party-line position, and lacking in any individual moral character whatsoever. Perfect tools.
“The award, which recognises contributions to United States culture, security and international interests...”
Other than Bill and Melinda Gates (pushing their world-wide abortion views), was there anybody else outside of the entertainment world? Although I suppose Springstein and Ross have gone on international concert tours.
He is rendering this award as bogus as the Nobel Peace Prize he received just for breathing.
Where’s his grave?
I need to Piss.
“These are folks who have helped make me who I am,’’ Obama said.
Everything is about him.
More snowflake tripe from President Insignificant.
Racist Bolt rider.
This makes me sick. However, he will be out of Office soon.
For munching carpet. Yes, that warrants a Medal of Freedom.
