anyways i believe that certain channels such as CNN and ESPN come with every bundle offered by comcast. i wonder if this is part of the problem given the continuous left-biased homogeneity in the news these days, emphasizing a canned set of liberal talking points even after the elections are finished. these guys have it good if we are actually paying them to brainwash us (!?!)

That's exactly right. Anyone on cable or dish pays them carriage fees whether you watch them or not. To me, it's like donating to Hillary every month.

If I have one roku (or roku-type) dongle and three TVs, must I buy two more roku-type dongles?

I am almost certain that you would, yes. Add in a router capable of transmitting on three different channels and you would be all set. Also, if you need to buy another TV in the future, you can get one already equipped with those devices. That's what I did, just bought me a Roku TV and saved the old device for backup.

Also if I live in earthquake country, is over-reliance on a land based (internet cable) carrier advisable (knowing that I can probably always get wireless cell data which is more reliable in earthquake situations, eg 1994 Northridge earthquake)?

I would think that if that occurred you would also have power problems too. Cell service could be affected also. That might be a toss up. I think I would find out how much wireless would cost for about 50 gig per TV per month (that's about what I use for one tv on 780dpi and this computer) I think wireless is much slower too and might not handle 3 TV's. I experimented on what Roku's bare minimum requirments were by limiting the router speed and 1mbs gives pretty good service without too much buffering. It runs the best at 3mbs and above. What I have is cable 50mbs with a monthly 350 gig limit. Anything above that is another 10 bucks per 50 gig.

So sorry to hear you got hooked into a 3 year contract. That probably would cost you a fortune to get out of.

meaning that, given those responses, it seems as if my original concerns tend to fall by the wayside.

I have an issue with paying someone to brainwash me, and beyond that, the procedure seems such a pointless waste of time and money all around since it ain’t workin’, haha.

A casual web search did not reveal a roku router box for multiple TVs (and that might require rewiring coax cable anyways, not that that is a big deal but it is some effort). I can buy three dongles. Or I can even go cheap since in my home we almost never have more than one TV on at one time, and just move the dongle wherever I want to watch the TV.

As for earthquakes and power, I already have that covered via a honda generator that puts out clean 120VAC. As I may have mentioned previously, experience in Southern California during the 1994 earthquake there seemed to indicate that cell phones were much more reliable than land lines.

That leaves the issue of the contract. I am wondering if I can use the argument that the delivery of the news has been substandard lately— in particular, I am concerned about the prevalence of “fake news” on the TV news channels. I wonder if there is some consumer provision that would allow me to get out of the contract. I suppose I could just try it and see what happens. Right now it is auto debiting my credit card every month, ugh.

However, I think this seems to be the spirit of following “with my feet” what Trump is complaining about with regards to the MSM. Otherwise, I continue to feed the beast.

I will go a bit further on this... A few days ago I received an email from an old lady friend who I have known since my college days (many years ago). It was to me and one other lady that we both knew from that era. Before I had a chance to respond, the second lady responded. To my moderate surprise (neither of them were slackers in college) both of them bemoaned the election of Trump and wished Hillary had been elected. I decided to jump in and express my joy that Trump had been elected. After a few days, I received a response in which my lady friend turned on me with considerable and uncharacteristically venomous force, telling me that I was a gun loving, misogynist racist. Wow, years of friendship gone with one political election! And not just a political election, but one in which one side adopts a lot of media fed propaganda. She told me she would have to stop contacting me, at least for a while. I responded with a second, deeper batch of reasoned arguments and agreed that she needed a timeout until she regained her rationality. The bottom line is that by paying these cable rates that in turn pay for propaganda such as seen on CNN, I have in fact been subsidizing not just pointless attempts to brainwash me but successful brainwashing of many other people, and in particular, perhaps, college educated women, many of whom seem particularly susceptible towards the kind of propaganda that has been coming out of the MSM for the last 24 years or so. So in summary disassociating from any cable and/or satellite TV networks that do not allow unbundling of individual channels is not just a lifestyle choice but the civic responsibility of any person who has serious issue with the MSM, and certainly for anyone who claims to be a patriot in the contemporary sense of the word. (Does this make any sense?)

Are there any satellite networks that allow unbundling of individual TV channels? Or, perhaps it is not even worth researching given that the current tech trend is away from cable and satellite and towards internet channels?

Why not just stop watching CNN? Many advertisers advertise in a wide array of venues...

Every cable box on the cable system as well as most satellite systems monitors and reports what you watch. As Cyber said just change the channel. It is way more effective than a boycott and is almost instant feedback to the ratings companies.

That said if you have a few minutes then by all means contact advertisers and let them know your feelings about CNN. Even if you still buy their products. Spend a few minutes bashing CNN on social media doesn’t hurt either.

When I tune into any of the news channels or local news I wait until they say something stupid and then I turn off the TV or change the channel.

CNN and MSNBC can rarely go a full minute without flunking the test. Sometimes they can flunk it in ten seconds. Of course if they say “racist” as the first word they are done in one second!

Yeah, I know what you mean. CNN makes no bones about what they believe .. since I don’t believe that .. I have no reason to ever watch them.

Well, boycotting a product which advertises .. doesn’t have that much impact, while a sudden DROP of viewers is a very, very powerful PUNCH to the program.

Like I explained, most people who advertise on TV or radio do so with an ad agency - an agency who lumps them together with other products, in order to lower the cost of advertising. A lot of times, if you call a product company, they will not even know where all their spots are running, because they have an Ad Agency do it for them.

Boycotting a product doesn’t work, unless it’s a product in a store where you can see a physical demonstration of people either buying it or returning it directly to the store.

Believe me .. CNN is getting the message, they just don’t want to change .. which is their problem. That’s why not tuning in .. is a very powerful and well-proven method of sending them a message - WE DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU’RE SELLING.

There is no real news at these “news stations,” But I laugh every time I tune in watching the eyes and facial expressions of the commentators at the station. When they say something so absolutely stupid that it is comical, their commentators are sometimes trying so hard not to laugh that I think they are about to relieve themselves at the table. They should be contracted by the comedy network.

It's amazing how some people who vote for avowed baby killers can claim the moral high ground, isn't it?

Here is the setup I have (or had until I bought the Roku TV). Although it's a newer (faster) version of what I had.

Roku streaming stick

This router has worked flawlessly for me and it looks like it can easly handle 3 Roku devices, too. TP-Link N300 Wireless Wi-Fi Router

So it looks like you can do 2 TV's for less than 100 bucks. Hope you figure out a way to get out of that contract!

This is good. I already do boycott the ones I may actually use, but will call them and remind them.
