My grandfather said that there was never any question as to going off to war, but that after he visited a recently liberated camp, he knew exactly why he was there.

Only talked about it one time. I wish that I had listened more, and talked less, but when I was 15 or 16 Grandpa would be around forever, and there would always be second chances.

Yep. We think we are so smart when we’re kids. Daddy was
SHELL SHOCKED all to hell from that war; couldn’t talk
about it much - so he fell into the habit of “nervous
chatter” to try to settle himself. (He hadn’t been a big
talker before the war.) He came back home; went to work
and provided for his family like the MAN that he was & is.

He died in 2002, after 9/11; and I suspect he had begun to
realize sort of what we were facing with the Jihadists. He
did not raise me to hide & whimper; but to shoot the
bastards!
