Based on the fact that Congress writes our laws.

And Congress can repeal or revise them. Are they going to do that in this case?

True - but that requirement can be waivered. From what I have seen, Mattis is the more dynamic of the two.

He's the younger of the two and by all accounts the better choice of the two. He will make a great Secretary of Defense...if he can be nominated and approved.

Mattis has been mentioned for the post for a long time now, at least since last January. Congressional leaders have indicated willingness to change the law.

I suppose. I don’t know how these waivers work. Maybe they change the law to say, “except General James Mattis”

Only blot on his record I can see is that he is on the Board of Directors at Theranos, which is nothing more than a huge con.

My son (ahem, army infantry:) agrees with your son! Mad Dog is a remarkable man, he is loved by those in service, he is the perfect man for this position at this time. I am praying, praying, he is asked and accepts.

I had never heard of him until the other day after talking to my son. Then I read this!
I would love to see a man like this in he administration, and I bet your son and my son agree wholeheartedly.

I’d prefer Mattis as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Yep, when soldiers and marines agree, time to sit up and take notice;)

Go online and read about him...in Afghanistan he would stand watch in the freezing cold dark with his men sometimes (instead of warm bed)...he loves them..he respects them and is legendary.

LOL I was just reading about him , then I clicked back to this tab and saw your post. Yep when you have marines and soldiers both agreeing , then we know this is the right guy. I will talk to my son later this morning. I have to wait because of the time difference, but I can;t wait to tell him about the General meeting with Donald Trump our next President . I will also mention that a soldier, your son agrees about this guy too.

General Mattis wrote me personal note congratulating me when I retired after 50 years as a Marine and a civilian employee of the Secretary of Defense. He didn’t have to do that, nor to add his personal insights congratulating me in the margin of the memo. He’s that kind of leader.

Here is part of a post I included on the Transition thread yesterday:

General “Mad Dog” Mattis is meeting with Trump today. I couldn’t remember much about him so did a little research this a.m. He reminds me a little of Patton (even looks a little like him) - who, as you know, is one of Trump’s favorite generals. I think he’d make a great Sec of Defense.

For those like me that needed more info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Mattis

FWIW, here’s an article from the Atlantic (not a conservative mag by any stretch) from 2010. They call his comments “Hair Raising” and I didn’t think they were:

I loved the story from the siege of Fallujah (I have to paraphrase, but I think it is mostly right) where the Marines who were preparing for the assault were being harassed and slowed down in their preparations by fire from a minaret of a mosque inside a walled area.

General Mattis drove up in a Humvee and asked what was going on and why were things delayed, and when the minaret the fire was coming from was pointed out, he said with no deliberation, handwringing, fanfare or fear of PC repercussions something to the effect of: “Put an artillery round on that tower, and a few more inside that walled area. Now.”

It was done, and they saw body parts and guns flying through the air from inside the walled mosque. I like that attitude. Could you see him as SecDef?

Day one: walks in the room at the Pentagon to give his first official address as Secretary of Defense:

"This crap is stopping today.

The issue of women in combat roles is rejected outright as of today and for the duration of my tenure, and nothing further will be discussed on it.

All racial/cultural/gender/homosexual sensitivity training and pandering stops as of today. Any commanders who persist will be drummed out.

And the “trial” of this Bergdahl turd is over. We can’t hang him, but he is going to be in prison for life.

I am going to pass legislation to allow open carry of weapons on all military bases world-wide for those who wish to do so. Appropriate training will be required. We will be getting rid of this "shelter-in-place" crap. We expect our fighting personnel to be able to protect themselves, there will be no more shameful Fort Hood incidents.

We will review the records of all military officers who were forced out of the military in the last eight years. If we determine they were forced out for reasons directly related to this PC bullcrap, they will be offered appropriate reentry if desired, and if they wish to remain retired, we will ensure those negative parts of their records are expunged and their status is restored.

Hear this, and hear it now: we will be focusing on warfighting and preparedness, not on transsexual issues or women’s reproductive rights. And the lowering of physical standards will be stopped as of today. If someone is out of shape, they will get in shape, or they will leave.”

I’ve know General Mattis for many years; he is the real deal and a wonderful man! Mattis is a man who listens and seeks advice, understanding from those actually doing the job. He believes the best source of knowledge is the man actually performing the task!

Mattis would be a Secretary of Defence on the Model of George C Marshall
