I’ve never cared for him, but he is a very capable man.
I think he could do a good job as Secretary of Defense. He is not a “nation-builder”, is definitely not a warmonger, but at the same time I do not think there is any danger of him backing down from a legitimate threat.

IIRC, his tenure as Secretary of the Navy in '87-'88 was not a happy time. He would bring a lot to the job, but also would bring a lot of baggage as well.
We need someone who is a competent administrator, who can take a hard look at Pentagon practices and figure out how to streamline the acquisition and administrative processes. Acquisition is probably the worst part of the DoD, both in vendor waste/fraud/abuse and the DoD's chronic inability to clearly and concisely lay out requirements without mandating costly changes deep into the process.
Don’t know much about his politics, but he’s a Vietnam War, Marine combat vet, Navy Cross recipient. A tough SOB.
