Stories have been popping in the wake of the 2016 election claiming that Donald Trump not only got fewer popular votes than Hillary Clinton, but he got fewer votes than Mitt Romney did in 2012 when he lost to Barack Obama. The combination seems to undermine Trump's claim to anything like a mandate.
"Donald Trump will become president although he received about 1.74 million fewer votes than 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney," wrote Kyle Feldscher in the Washington Examiner.
Never-Trumper Ben Shapiro, writing in National Review, claimed that "Trump underperformed Romney ... in a vastly expanded electorate. That's not the mark of a huge wave."
Some reporters are making the same claim about Hillary Clinton. The Washington Post's Philip Bump wrote that "Hillary Clinton's campaign was crippled by voters who stayed home," and that she "received far fewer votes than Barack Obama in an election that was supposed to see a big increase in turnout."
The problem is, all these stories are wrong.

This just shows how few RINO’s there really are. The RINO’s stayed home or voted 3rd party. They didn’t have an impact on the results.
Ayotte is a douche bag and ran against Trump. She can KMA.
NYT has it 60,071,781 (47.7%) for Hillary, 59,791,135 (47.5%)
for Trump. Toss in the remainder from CA, that sounds about right.
It also puts him ahead of Romney’s total.

At the top of that article it says: "UPDATE: It turns out that CNN's projection for Trump was a "design flaw." Hillary Clinton is still poised to win the popular vote."
Okay. But what does that say about Clinton’s vote count? She must have gotten about 2 million fewer votes than Obama did in 2012.
Trump should only offer positions to COMPETENT people, not based on their gender and/or race.
Have you not been paying attention?
Thanks.
I did read the article.
Did you read my comment where I qualified the numbers I used as "reported" and noted that the vote count was not yet finalized?
Illegals allowed to vote, dead people, felons in VA, massive fraud. She got more illigitimate votes than Trump.
She’s going to end up a with round 62.5M or so. Obama got 65.9M.
I haven’t looked at the exit numbers, but I would bet most of the 3.4M difference is the loss of white voters.
Where people vote is as important as how many. Focusing where he did, Trump got votes that counted.
The media worked overtime to suppress Trump votes. If Americans find out Trump isn’t the devil over the next four years 2020 could be a very bad year for democrats.
Ayotte? Not only no, but HELL NO!
I don’t really care who got the most votes - he’s got the most Electoral College votes (and it’s growing as a few States finally give up trying to find tons of “lost” Hillary votes) and she didn’t come close.
Yup. The Dems committed a fatal mistake so stupid only Republicans have been known to make it in the past.
Nominating your worst possible candidate because it’s “their turn”.

They are still counting the votes. Confdent Trump will surpass Romney.
If you read the articles dummy it says no. There are still nearly 10 million votes not counted and Trump will probably end up with 63-4million and Clinton 65-6 million - close to Obamas number.
Republicans trying to deligitimize Trumps win are pukes.
He ran a strategic rust belt strategy and won big league. More EVs than Bush in 2000 or 2004.
Plus ran against his own party establishment, got almost no help from Super PACs (croosroads, Koch, Chambet) unlike McCain or Romney. Cripes Romneybot McMullin will end up with around 600k. Those were stolen by Romney. And now you all want to brag about Romney?
Screw you all trying to rain on a great historic win by Trump and those who supported him.
Excellent point!! If the whole Republican establishment had supported Trump like they did McLame and Mittens then Trump would have topped 70 Million votes cast easily and this wouldn’t even be a topic of conversation. The establishment Republicans did everything in their powers to suppress their OWN voters to try to prevent a Trump victory....and thank God they FAILED!!!
incorrect. Trump has more votes than Mccain
You’re looking an old numbers. Ballots are still being counted and is not complete. Trump is up to
60,116,240 votes now
Interested in finding out romneys votes on 11th november, not the final number so we could guestimate how many votes trump will get at the end
