THE election of Donald Trump could mean devastation for the European Union with the parliament's president Martin Schulz admitted relations just become "harder".
Mr. Trump was confirmed as the next United States president this morning and within minutes Mr Schulz spoke out over his disappointment.
The EU has enjoyed close links with the US and President Barack 0bama and is a major trading partner.
The EU president told Europe 1 radio It will be hard, harder than with previous administrations but he is the freely elected president.
"We must respect the future president of the United States (...) I hope we will find a slot to cooperate."
Mr Trump has been disparaging of the bloc over the last year, backing Brexit and inviting Mr Schulz's arch enemy Nigel Farage to the US.
Mr Schulz expanded on his comments on Twitter this morning where he released a statement saying Mr Trump had become the "standard-bearer of the angst and fears of millions of Americans".
He added: "Global politics requires the continuous engagement of the US to make the world a better place to leave to our children.
"From the fight against global warming to its commitment to NATO, the world awaits and hopes for an outward-looking presidency aiming at shaping international relations and upholding the values of freedom and democracy."
Mr Schulz added the EU is the "largest trading partner of the US" and concluded: "The EU is committed to maintain this relationship. We hope the same holds true for the future US President."
Speculation is mounting over what Trump would do next following his election
The EUs Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt also lamented Mr Trumps victory.
He wrote on Twitter: Trump wins. Not only missed chance to elect a 1st woman president.
Wake up call for Europe to further unite & take charge of its own destiny.
EU Commission Jean-Cluade Juncker is yet to respond to this mornings news.
There had been speculation the US election could have far reaching consequences for the EU.
In the run-up to his victory, Mr Trump said: I think the EU is going to break up, he told the Times. The people are fed up, whether its here or in other countries. You watch: other countries will follow.
ONE of them...
The other is a whole new re-definition of NATO's mission. And extent of our obligation and involvment given this is going to be 2017. NATO was established back in 1949 when much of Europe was in tatters and broke and threatened by the USSR.
No longer is ANY of the the case, nor has it been for 25 years. The security of Europe is Europe's problem, frankly. That frees up resources that needs to be earmarked for the infrastructure of the USA.
Reason to be happy for trump victory #1923:
The UK just got moved from the back of the line to the front of the line for USA trade deals!
The UK just got moved from the back of the line to the front of the line for USA trade deals!
+1!
It was just said that this is exactly what the EU fears from a Trump Presidency. (yes -- didn't Emperor 0bama threaten Britain not long ago with a "back of the line" punishment for BREXIT?
If Europe is going to continue to pursue acquisition of global control then absolutely they and everyone on any contingent who supports them needs to be made more unstable.
Military help against Islam needs to have an ironclad prerequisite of not opposing US security interests.
Hence we need to reaquaint Europe with the concept of self preservation.
You want to cajole Europe with milquetoast rhetoric.
I prefer tough love and then bailing out only those countries which first turn on Islam. Stop bailing the junkies out of jail and paying their rent. Make them go through detox and then give them a supervised job with supervised parole.
Yeah, some will overdose. That’s on them.

I'm with you to a certain extent; Do you actually believe the propaganda that there was some kind of consensus by Europeans to allow millions of Muzzies to overrun their respective countries?
The ONLY case that may be true might be in Norway or Sweden.
Amen
To the EU President, do we give a -—T, what you think? You are watching the end of the EU...
