The German Interior Ministry wants to stop migrants ever reaching Europe's Mediterranean coast by picking them up at sea and returning them to Africa, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday.
In what would be a huge shift for a country with one of the most generous asylum policies, the ministry says the European Union should adopt an Australian-style system under which migrants intercepted at sea are sent for processing at camps in third countries.
"The elimination of the prospect of reaching the European coast could convince migrants to avoid embarking on the life-threatening and costly journey in the first place," the paper quoted a ministry spokeswoman as saying.
"The goal must be to remove the basis for people-smuggling organizations and to save migrants from the life-threatening journey."

These African and Middle Eastern hell-holes need to take care of their own. They have more natural resources and a favorable climate. Get rid of your dictators, give your people freedom and transition to a market economy, and you'll be just as prosperous as Western nations are.

They don’t have the intellect to do that. I’m not trying to be mean. It’s the truth, though.
Plenty of the boats have sunk or been shipwrecked.
Doesn’t seem to stop them coming
Nothing short of military force is going to stop the immigrants from Africa. They already know that about 20% of those that set off for Europe just disappear but they still keep coming. It is a terrible thing to say but only guns are going to stop them. Africa is just so terrible for most of the people that they will keep coming. Probably 75% of the men have no cash employment.
I agree, they are beyond hope.
Intellect might be debatable, but they absolutely do not have the accumulated knowledge and traditions in their people and institutions that could build and sustain successful nations in the 21st century. They are a few centuries behind.
Even South Africa, which is still light-years ahead of the rest of the continent economically, has big problems with migrants coming there.
Commandeer some cruise ships load them up, turn off the stabilizers and make sure that the ships pass 500 miles south of The Cape of Good Hope before delivering them near home.
