I had a project on board that ship. My opinion is that the ship would be unsafe in combat. It is no better armored than a pleasure boat.
Even non-state actors are firing anti-ship missiles from shore. Hezbollah, in Lebanon has managed to hit five vessels that I know of. It seriously damaged an Israeli patrol boat and the Israelis now run with their anti-missile systems active at all times. (Hezbollah sank a Greek freighter.)
The Independence class mission is to go into harm’s way. But it isn’t tough enough for Harm’s neighborhood.
They are sexy and fast and these electronic marvels are great for showing off at boat shows but won’t survive combat and don’t do so well in a canal transit.
