I've spent time on the TIGHAR website and like you, I believe she died as a castaway on Nikumaroro.
From the article, "TIGHAR plans to search the area [for the missing plane] with submarines next year - the 80th anniversary of Earhart's disappearance."
I think they'll be successful and the mystery will finally be over.

Had to Google Nikumaroro.
Apparently they have found some American bottles, cosmetics, and related items from the pre-War period on what is essentially an uninhabited island. The British tried to colonize it between 1938-63, but gave up due to unreliable supplies of fresh water.
