They called each other darling, dear one and heart. They told each other je taime and jadore, and wrote more than 3,000 letters to one another.
While I don't have an opinion of Mrs. Roosevelt and Hick, I'd like to admonish those who look at past correspondences the way we might today. The French in particular have a way of gushing that doesn't necessarily imply anything sexual.
There was a time when women could be affectionate with each other without lesbianism being assumed. Look at some 1950's vintage Archie comic books, and you will see Betty and Veronica holding hands. It was normal before EVERYTHING had to have a sexual undertone. The stupid term "bromance" is used to apply to guys who were just buddies.
Our loss.

Well, I kind of agree with you. This does look a bit like a Boston Marriage but who really knows? I’m surprised someone hasn’t tried to make Annie Sullivan & Helen Keller into lovers!

It’s also not uncommon to see Asian women walking arm in arm.

Well said, and very true. Female friendships during the Victorian Period were much different than they are now. I’m old fashioned, and tell my closest and dearest friend that I love her...because basically, we’re family.

I agree with you. Even today, girls call their good friends "girlfriend," and no one - at least among sane people - think anything sexual of it.
It is different with guys. But then, guys ARE different from women, although they can still have intense personal relationships with other guys which aren't sexual.

If you want to see some 1950s lipstick lesbianism, watch this movie:
